A pH buffer solution is a type of solution that can keep the pH value stable. If a small amount of acid or base is added to this solution, or a small amount of acid or base is produced through a chemical reaction in the solution, or the solution is appropriately diluted, the pH value of this solution remains basically stable. Such a solution that can resist a small amount of acid or base or dilution and keep the pH value from changing easily is called a pH buffer solution.
pH buffer solutions are divided into two major categories: standard buffer solutions and common buffer solutions.
Standard buffer solutions are mainly used for instrument calibration and positioning when pH meters measure the pH value of solutions, with the requirement for accurate and precise values. Therefore, there are strict requirements for the purity of reagents, the accuracy of concentration, temperature, etc.
Common buffer solutions are mainly used in the determination process of chemical analysis and instrumental analysis where a certain pH value needs to be controlled. Almost all EDTA complexometric titrations must be carried out within a certain pH range, so a pH buffer solution needs to be added.
